Leading automobile manufacturer BMW has announced plans to establish a new Cell Recycling Competence Center (CRC) in the Lower Bavaria region of Kirchroth, Germany. The facility will leverage “direct recycling” technology to recover and repurpose valuable materials from battery cells, according to GSM Arena.

Unlike traditional methods, direct recycling focuses on extracting materials such as lithium, cobalt, graphite, and nickel, making them immediately reusable in the production of new battery cells. This approach is more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Spanning an area of 2,200 square meters, the CRC is set to commence operations in the second half of 2025.

BMW aims to develop a more sustainable model for producing electric vehicles by reducing waste and potentially lowering costs. The direct recycling method is expected to decrease dependence on raw materials while significantly mitigating the environmental impact of battery manufacturing.
